The Connection Between Tarot & Meditation

Tarot and meditation are both powerful tools for spiritual growth and self-discovery. While tarot has long been used to provide insight into our lives, meditation offers a way to still the mind and connect with the deeper, more intuitive parts of ourselves. When we combine these two practices, they create a synergistic effect that can greatly enhance our spiritual journey.

Exploring the connection between tarot and meditation highlights how beautifully these systems can work together. With guided meditations to align with specific tarot cards, and simple tarot spreads to stir inspiration, I hope you'll enjoy this article!

Tarot and Meditation: A Harmonious Duo

When you think about it, tarot and meditation complement each other perfectly. Tarot is about tapping into your intuition and gaining clarity on life’s situations, while meditation is about quieting the mind and becoming more present. Together, they help to balance our inner and outer worlds.

When we meditate before pulling tarot cards, we create a calm and receptive space within ourselves. This helps us to approach the cards with greater clarity and openness, allowing us to interpret them in a more intuitive and meaningful way.

Similarly, after a tarot reading, meditation can help us integrate the insights we’ve received, creating space to process and embody the wisdom of the cards. In essence, tarot and meditation can be seen as two sides of the same coin: both are ways of connecting to our inner guidance and deepening our spiritual awareness.

Guided Meditations for Specific Tarot Cards

What about using meditation to connect with specific tarot cards? This practice can help forge a personal relationship with the cards by unlocking deeper layers of meaning and insight. Here are a few guided meditations I have used to give you a feel of how meditating with tarot can take you deeper.

For all meditations, ensure you are sitting comfortably with your back supported. It's best to settle yourself in a place, and at a time, where you won't be disturbed. Make the space your own by lighting candles or incense. You might also like to have music playing quietly in the background. As always, I recommend journaling once the meditation is over. Writing about the experience or the insights gained builds our connection to tarot.

1. The Fool: Embracing New Beginnings

Meditation: Take several deep breaths and imagine yourself standing at the edge of a cliff, just like The Fool. Feel the lightness of his energy—the excitement of a fresh start, the freedom of not knowing what lies ahead. You may feel a shiver of fear at the thought of taking such a great leap into the unknown, but visualise yourself stepping forward into the with complete trust in the universe.

When you land, observe your surroundings. Where have you arrived? Who is around you, what are you doing, and how does it feel? When you're ready, move ahead. Embrace the adventure as your path unfolds. Allow optimism and joy to fill your heart. Picture your ideal life playing out before you, and as you do, soak up all the positive emotions.

When you’re ready, slowly return to the present moment, carrying that sense of possibility with you. Journal your experience.

2. The High Priestess: Tapping Into Your Intuition

Meditation: Picture yourself walking through a beautiful landscape. Ahead, two pillars appear, one black, one white. They're the entrance to a temple. Step between the pillars, noting how the air shimmers against your skin. Inside, a serene, celestial space opens before you. Sitting on a throne, is the High Priestess, shrouded in mystery and wisdom.

A seat decked in pomegranate velvet waits opposite her. Take your place, and once you're settled, ask the High Priestess to help you to unlock your own intuitive powers.

Imagine a glowing light emerging from within as you meditate. It illuminates the dark temple. Allow this light to grow until it fills your entire being, connecting you to your inner knowing.

Sit within this light until you're ready to leave. Before you do, ask the High Priestess if she has a message for you. When you return to the present, observe if there are shifts in clarity.

3. The Strength Card: Cultivating Inner Courage

Meditation: Imagine the Strength card in your mind—a woman calmly taming a lion. Picture yourself as the woman, connecting with the lion within you, symbolizing your inner fears and challenges. Feel the power of gentleness, compassion, and resilience as you calmly soothe the lion’s wild energy. Allow yourself to become one with that sense of quiet strength.

With a calmer mind, can you gain new insights in how to deal with challenges?

Tarot Spreads for Meditation and Spiritual Growth

Incorporating tarot into your meditation practice can deepen your connection to both the cards and your spiritual self. Here are a few beginner-friendly tarot spreads that focus on inner growth and self-awareness.

1. The Reflection Spread (3 Cards)

This simple spread is perfect for meditation and reflection. It encourages you to explore your inner landscape and gain insight into your current emotional or spiritual state.

1: Your current emotional state

2: What your intuition wants you to know

3: How you can move forward with clarity and peace

After pulling these cards, spend a few minutes meditating on their messages. Notice any emotions or thoughts that arise, and allow your inner wisdom to guide you toward deeper understanding.

2. The Mind-Body-Spirit Spread (3 Cards)

This popular spread is wonderful for checking in with yourself on all levels—mind, body, and spirit. It’s a grounding practice that helps you stay balanced, and one of my favourite spreads.

1: The current state of your mind

2: The current state of your body

3: The current state of your spirit (or What message does Spirit have for me today?)

Once you’ve pulled your cards, sit in meditation and visualize each area of your being. See the connection between mind, body, and spirit, and let the messages of the cards guide you toward greater harmony.

3. The Intuition Spread (4 Cards)

Another great spread to tap into your intuition and uncover hidden truths or deeper insights. It’s a great spread to use before meditation, especially if ruminating on a particular challenge.

1: What your conscious mind knows

2: What your subconscious mind is revealing

3: What your intuition is guiding you toward

4: How to align with your inner truth

After reading the cards, take time to meditate on how your conscious mind and intuition can work together. Focus on the messages that arise from your inner guidance.

Happy meditating and tarot reading!

Psst! How often should I meditate?

How often you should meditate depends on your personal goals, lifestyle, and preferences. However, here are some general guidelines to help you establish a consistent practice:

For Beginners

Start with 5-10 minutes a day: If you're new to meditation, it’s better to start with a short daily practice. Even a few minutes can make a big difference and help you build a habit without feeling overwhelmed.

For Consistency and Mindfulness

Aim for 10-20 minutes daily: A consistent daily practice is the most beneficial. Meditating every day, even for a short time, helps you cultivate mindfulness and develop a deeper connection with yourself over time.

For Deeper Spiritual Growth

30-45 minutes, 3-5 times a week: If your goal is deepening your spiritual practice, longer sessions a few times a week can allow you to explore meditation on a more profound level, especially if paired with tarot or other spiritual tools.

When Time is Limited

Even 2-5 minutes can help: On busy days, a short meditation can still be effective. Quick breathing exercises, body scans, or momentary mindfulness breaks can keep you grounded. The key is to find a rhythm that works for you, one that you can sustain and enjoy. Even meditating a few times a week can have positive effects if done mindfully.

I always recommend Insight Timer (no affiliation). It has a desktop and mobile version, and although there is a paid membership level, the free level has a huge amount of guided meditations, music, talks, and lots of other content. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, it's a superb app.
