Tarot for Creatives July 29th to August 4th 2024

Hello, Creatives!

This week’s Tarot for Creatives theme is creative block, as requested by a reader challenged by this pesky bother. ‘I have a project and client waiting, but am finding it increasingly difficult to finish the work,’ they wrote. ‘I was inspired and excited at the beginning, but in the last two weeks I’ve been struggling to even enter my studio.’ So, for the reader in question, and anyone else battling creative block, I’m asking the cards the following: What is blocking energy, How to move beyond the block, Where to focus creative energy.

Page of Swords, Ace of Wands, and Strength tarot cards on a black cloth with a plant, candle, and crystals
Page of Swords, Ace of Wands, Strength. Deck: Golden Art Nouveau Tarot

The Page of Swords is an analytical energy, one that wants to examine everything to figure out exactly how it works. This keen curiosity is great when it comes to learning, but in a situation where focus needs to rest upon creativity, the scrutiny can interrupt flow.

Swords work from the head space with their logical, practical energy, but creativity typically prefers the fiery, passionate energy of Wands which operates from the heart space. Consider the thoughts surrounding the project with which you’re struggling. Perhaps they’re focused on finances, work processes, or how the outcome of this project may affect future expansion. This kind of thinking is far more linear than the meandering streams of creative energy. It can also introduce unwarranted pressure to perform, so reflect also on the weight of expectation surrounding the project. The Page loves to swish their sword however, so once they do realise they’ve tied themselves up in mental knots, one swing of determined focus and they’re free.

“Be where you are, stop over-thinking, and focus on what you’re doing.” - Roy T Bennett.

The exciting Ace of Wands punches through creative block, marking the way forward.

While Aces represent new beginnings, in this particular situation, it asks for new thinking around how to shake up stagnated creative energy. A potent card when it comes to creativity and drive, the power behind the Ace of Wands lies in being. Where the Page leans into planning and logic and straight lines leading to pivotal outcomes, the Ace is an energy of free flow. Picture the Wand as a magic wand, waiting for you to grab and point. The magic waiting to be conjured is limitless. Without the straight lines of the Page, where does your thinking flow? Shift attention away from the end game and experiment with childlike fun.

In the spirit of newness that Aces bring, why not try out a new medium or process as a way to shake up energy? A different view may unlock renewed inspiration.

Strength doesn’t tell us exactly where to focus creative energy—because we’re all individuals with unique inspirations—but what it does say, is trust yourself, the answer lies within, and you’ve got this.

Take a moment to sit with your vision for the creative project. Somewhere along the way, the path filled with obstacles, choking out all the fun. The logical thinking of the Page smothered the flow of heart, replacing creativity with practicality. Strength has appeared as a reminder to face the internal, to examine what’s being smothered to appease the external world. Look at the untamed aspects of your being, it says, and let them out to play! You don’t need to move off your client’s brief to embrace Strength. Instead, allow it to infuse your work in a way that fires inspiration. Inner grace is the theme of Strength, a reminder of our internal power and gifts. With a firm but gentle touch, we can tame whatever challenges us.
